We have found that the best fold to use with the MyCup™ is the “punch-down fold”.

Getting your menstrual cup to open can be challenging, especially when you try a menstrual cup for the first time. MyCup™ has a strong rim and if you don’t hold your cup fold firmly it can ping open mid-insert. Make sure you hold your fold firmly and push the cup up as far as you can past the first set of muscles at the entrance of your vagina. The “punch-down-fold” works best, and was the preferred fold in our research trial to ensure the cup opened correctly.

To check your fold has opened correctly and formed a seal you need to check the following:

  1. It feels comfortable after insertion (no cramping, sharp pain, etc)
  2. You do not feel any pressure (like your cup will pop out)
  3. You can run your finger around the base of the cup and it feels “bouncy” and round (not collapsed on any side or folded in half)
  4. The base of the cup is sitting above your muscles at the entrance of your vagina.

If any of the above are not achieved then remove your cup by pinching the base, breaking the seal and pulling gently on the stem. Try again.

Sometimes even the most experienced cup users can have a day when they can’t get their cup to open. This can be due to the fact that your cervix changes position throughout your cycle, therefore having an effect on successful cup placement. If you have a “busy” cervix it can be helpful to check the position of your cervix before you insert your cup. This has proved to be of great value to some women when they find cup placement difficult.

Here is a few menstrual cup folds that we recommend trying, the C-fold and the Punch-down fold are the most popular. There are plenty of other folds but we think these four work the best with the strong rim of MyCup™

The U-Fold or C-Fold

Menstrual Cup Fold - C-Fold

  1. Start with your cup open
  2. Flatten the cup between your fingers and thumb
  3. Fold in half (making a U/C/Heart shape)
  4. Pinch the sides of the rim together and hold firmly

The Punch-Down Fold

Menstrual Cup Fold - Push Down Fold

  1. Start with your cup open
  2. Flatten the cup between your fingers and thumb
  3. Push one side of the rim down towards the inside of the cup
  4. Pinch the sides of the rim together to ensure the cup does not open
  5. Try to make the top as small as possible to make it easy to insert.

The 7 Fold / Triangle Fold

Menstrual Cup Fold - 7-fold

  1. Start with your cup open
  2. Pinch the cup closed
  3. Bring one top corner down diagonally to the opposite bottom corner
  4. Pinch together tightly with your thumb and forefinger.

The Tulip Fold

Menstrual Cup Fold - Tulip Fold

  1. Start with your cup open
  2. Flatten the cup between your fingers and thumb
  3. Push one side of the rim down towards the inside of the cup
  4. Fold one side over the other to make the tip as small as possible.
  5. This looks like a tulip bud and is the smallest end you can make with a cup fold.
